What is Scalp Micropigmentation

Scalp Micropigmentation is a method of disguising hair loss by “tattooing” tiny spots the size of hair follicles onto the scalp in the hair loss areas. This technique can be used in many scenarios such as hair transplant fills in and failure, hiding of scar and filling in thinning areas with great results. It is suitable for both men and woman. Scalp Micropigmentation is also a viable alternative to hair transplant.

It is important to differentiate SMP from standard tattoo procedures. Standard tattooing uses much larger inking impressions, creating large blotches of ink deep in the skin that will not look natural in this application. SMP must be performed by a trained SMP artist using pigment & needle impressions specifically designed for this purpose in order to create effective, natural results.

Organic dyes are used to give the appearance and feel of a recently shaved scalp. Results are visible immediately and long-lasting. More than one procedure may be required to achieve the desired appearance.

The impressions ‘dots’ are very small and for a person with hair that is not black (light brown for example) the pigment color can mimic the hair around the fringe, almost a dark gray which will not be a problem with age. We generally make the color match the hair color (shade). Remember that as the hair grows out from the scalp, it is exposed to sunlight (normally) and the hair in almost all people who do not have black hair will see some hair lightening, so we address that up-front as we select the initial color we use. Pigment shades are carefully selected to blend as closely as possible with your real hair. This pigment selection process is highly individual and is essential to ensure a successful outcome. Going grey is a slow and gradual process, and is therefore usually matched as your pigments fade slowly over time. If you do go grey, it is quite possible that the usual touch-up session that you would otherwise require to keep your pigmentation fresh will not be required.

SMP aftercare is similar to tattoo care but not the exact same process. I discuss aftercare with each client during your consultation and after each session of Scalp Micropigmentation. Call and I can let you know the best process for you

On a scale from 1-10, it’s a light discomfort level of about 3. It feels more like a sunburn than anything. It’s nothing for you to be fearful of.

Avoid washing your head with soap or water for 3 days; showering with water is ok. It takes about 3 days for the pigment to set into the scalp.

There is no reason why you couldn’t get a hair transplant after the process. However, if you are planning to get a hair transplant I suggest getting it first. This way you can see what density you need from Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP. Your new follicles of the hair are anchored deep so the pigment won’t affect the hairs’ growth rate or thickness in the area.

This is a permanent process that we use so expect that it will be there for your entire life. This is the reason you need it done right the first time or it will drive up the cost as you try to remove it, fix it and redo it. Experience, just like with a hair transplant, is the critical factor.

It varies based on what needs to be done. Best thing I can tell you to do is to call me so we can see what your needs are. The consultation appointment is free.
